Nayib Bukele transfers Francisco Morazán remains to new mausoleum
Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele led a solemn ceremony to transfer the remains of Francisco Morazán to a newly constructed mausoleum. The event took place at Jardín Centroamérica, located near the National Palace of San Salvador, and featured military ceremonial uniforms and symbolic gestures.
Morazán was a prominent 19th-century political and military leader who governed the Federal Republic of Central America between 1830 and 1838. Born in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, he was a central figure in the effort to maintain the political union of Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica.
The relocation of the remains is part of a Salvadoran government initiative to revitalize and transform the historic center of San Salvador. While intended to provide permanent protection for the remains, the ceremony has prompted various historical and political interpretations regarding Morazán’s legacy of regional integration.
