NAZA documentary examines Israeli military AI use in Gaza

The documentary 'NAZA', directed by Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor, has sparked significant controversy following its premiere at the Venice Film Festival, where it received a Special Jury Prize. Produced in collaboration with The Guardian and JW Films, the film investigates the Israeli military's use of artificial intelligence and surveillance technologies in Gaza.

'NAZA' is named after a Hebrew military acronym for 'collateral damage' (Nezek Agavi). The film relies on testimonies from 24 anonymous Israeli intelligence officers and military personnel who describe the systematic processes used to identify targets and the resulting civilian casualties. To protect the identities of these sources, their faces and voices have been digitally obscured.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has issued a formal rebuttal, labeling the documentary's claims as 'distorted, misleading and dishonest.' The military maintains that it follows strict guidelines to distinguish between combatants and civilians and denies that algorithms independently decide on strikes. In response, The Guardian defended the film's integrity, noting that the three-year investigation involved interviewing over 100 sources with knowledge of Israeli military systems.
