Lviv commemorates 85th anniversary of WWII massacre of Polish university professors

On 4 July, a ceremony in Lviv marked the 85th anniversary of the Nazi mass shooting of Polish university professors and their families on the Vuhlehirskyi (Wzgórza Wuleckie) hills. Representatives of the Polish diplomatic corps, Ukrainian authorities, local university officials and Polish organisations gathered to lay flowers and light candles at the monument erected in 2011.

The 1941 atrocity saw 25 professors from Lviv's higher education institutions, including Tadeusz Boy‑Żeleński, rector Roman Longchamps de Berier and his three sons, rector Kasper Weigel and dentist pioneer Antoni Cieszyński, along with family members, totalling 45 victims. The crime was discussed at the 1946 Nuremberg Military Tribunal and later investigated by authorities in West Germany and Poland. The commemoration was announced by the Polish Consulate General in Lviv, emphasizing joint Polish‑Ukrainian commitment to preserving the memory of the victims.
