Nazi symbols deface memorial and public spaces in Italy

Nazi symbols and hateful graffiti have been discovered in two separate locations in Italy, sparking local indignation.

In Viareggio, a mural dedicated to partisans Didala Ghilarducci and Ciro Bertini (known as Chittò) was defaced with swastikas. The artwork, titled ‘Essere umano – Essere partigiano’, was originally created to honor the couple’s resistance efforts and to cover previous racist graffiti on the same wall. The mural was located near the Burlamacca shopping center in the Varignano area.

In Luino, Nazi-related vandalism was documented at Parco Margorabbia. Spray-painted messages including references to Adolf Hitler, swastikas, and the name ‘Dongo’ were found on public benches, tables, and pavement within a covered area of the park. The graffiti has caused significant backlash among local residents due to the nature of the symbols in a public space.
