NBA Commissioner Adam Silver reportedly considers shortening game duration

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver is reportedly interested in a proposal to shorten game durations from 48 to 40 minutes, adopting a format similar to the EuroLeague and other international competitions. This potential change comes amid growing concerns regarding player injuries and the physical burden on league stars.

According to Sports Illustrated reporter Chris Mannix, while Silver may favor the idea, significant hurdles remain. Financial feasibility is a primary concern, as the league must determine how a shorter game would impact revenue. Additionally, there are concerns regarding roster management. Mannix suggests that shortening games might not actually reduce the minutes played by star athletes, but could instead lead teams to rely on smaller rotations, potentially marginalizing bench players and reducing the need for 15-man rosters.
