NBA Europe to launch new league with Berlin and Munich as key franchise sites

NBA Europe plans to start a new continent‑wide league in October 2027, creating a top‑tier competition called NBA Europe. The structure will feature up to twelve permanent franchise slots, with four additional teams qualifying through FIBA club competitions such as the Champions League.

NBA Europe chief George Aivazoglou told the German press that “as long as a team is very good and plays well, it has the right to dream of competing with the giants of the continent.” Investors are submitting multi‑billion‑euro offers for the fixed franchises, and the league’s most promising German locations are Berlin and Munich, which are being prioritised for franchise awards.

Negotiations with the EuroLeague are ongoing, but Aivazoglou said the NBA and FIBA will proceed with the new system even if a partnership with the EuroLeague does not materialise. Final franchise bids are due by the end of the month.
