NBA expansion talks focus on Seattle and Las Vegas venues

The NBA is actively exploring expansion to 32 teams, with discussions currently focused on Seattle and Las Vegas. During the recent Board of Governors meetings, Commissioner Adam Silver noted that while Seattle possesses the state-of-the-art Climate Pledge Arena which could be ready for play almost immediately, Las Vegas faces more complex logistical hurdles regarding venue selection.

Potential options for Las Vegas include renovating the T-Mobile Arena or constructing a new, modern entertainment facility. The league aims to make final decisions by the end of the year, following another round of bids. If approved, the new franchises are targeted to begin play in the 2028-29 season, preceded by an expansion draft in the summer of 2028.

Financial implications for the league are significant, with expansion fees potentially ranging between $500 million and $600 million per franchise. Regarding player impact, Golden State Warriors veteran Draymond Green suggested that talent dilution is primarily a concern for owners and executives rather than players, noting that the quality of opposing rosters is not a primary concern for active athletes.
