NBA faces scrutiny over Rwanda ties and allegations of hypocrisy
U.S. Senators Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) and Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) have sent a letter to NBA Commissioner Adam Silver questioning the league’s business relationship with Rwanda. The senators expressed alarm regarding potential “sportswashing,” suggesting the league may be helping the Rwandan government improve its international image to distract from alleged human rights abuses.
Currently, the NBA maintains a relationship with Rwanda that includes the Basketball Africa League hosting and marketing arrangements, reportedly worth $6 million to $7 million annually. Additionally, the Los Angeles Clippers feature “Visit Rwanda” on their jerseys through a sponsorship agreement. The senators are seeking clarity on the league’s “red line” for accepting funds from foreign governments accused of human rights violations.
Separately, former NBA player Enes Kanter Freedom has issued a warning to the league, claiming to possess secret audio recordings of officials and team owners. Freedom alleges these recordings will demonstrate corporate double standards, citing past instances where he was pressured by league representatives to remove footwear featuring political messages regarding Tibet.
