NBA implements salary cap rules and technology trials
The NBA is introducing new economic and technological developments for the upcoming 2026-27 season. Regarding league finances, the salary cap has been set at $164.961 billion, with a minimum spending requirement of $148.465 billion to ensure players receive their share of projected revenues. To manage high-spending teams, the league utilizes a luxury tax threshold, set at $200.428 billion for the 2026-27 campaign, which imposes progressive fines on owners who exceed the limit.
In terms of technology, the league is testing two new tools during the 2026 preseason. The first is a connected Wilson basketball featuring an integrated Bluetooth sensor designed to collect data for future research and decision-making models. The second is a wearable device for referees intended to improve communication with the Replay Center during reviews, score changes, or clock errors. Currently, these technologies are for research and communication purposes only and do not replace official officiating decisions or video reviews.
