NBA tests smart basketballs and wearable tech for officials

The NBA is conducting preseason trials of new technologies designed to assist officiating and improve game accuracy. Central to these tests is a smart basketball developed by Wilson, which features an internal Bluetooth sensor to collect real-time data. This technology aims to help resolve complex plays, such as determining which player had last contact with the ball or managing shot-clock precision.

Additionally, the league is testing wearable wrist devices for referees. These tools are intended to facilitate direct communication with the league’s replay center to streamline reviews regarding scoring changes, clock malfunctions, and play revisions. The NBA has emphasized that during this research phase, the data collected will not influence actual officiating decisions or impact the regular season until the reliability of the equipment is fully verified.
