NBA Plans 2027 European League to Expand Global Reach
NBA executives announced that a new 16‑team European league will launch in October 2027. The competition will feature twelve permanent franchises and four spots earned on merit, aiming to broaden the NBA’s international presence and increase revenue streams. Leaders highlighted goals of sustainable club finances, talent development, and attracting new fans, noting Europe’s strong basketball tradition and the involvement of former star Pau Gasol.
The league’s rollout was discussed at the Sports Summit Madrid, where officials stressed the need to align calendars with existing European sports and to harmonise officiating standards. The NBA views this initiative as a strategic growth opportunity in a global market where a growing share of fans are outside the United States.
