NBA pushes ahead with Europe league launch planned for 2027

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver confirmed that the league remains on schedule to start an independent Europe‑based competition in the 2027‑28 season. The project, developed with FIBA, has received strong interest and will award franchise bids by the end of June, with cities such as Paris and Manchester slated as potential hosts.

NBA Vice‑President Mark Tatum said the league will continue negotiations with the EuroLeague but is prepared to move forward with its own partners and investors if an agreement is not reached. The expansion is targeted to begin in October 2027, and franchise applications are expected from existing European clubs and new investors, including a proposed team in Rome that Luka Dončić is considering.

Both executives emphasized that the initiative aims to grow basketball across Europe, working with FIBA and other stakeholders while seeking a collaborative outcome for the sport’s ecosystem.
