NBA Restructures Workforce to Support European League Launch and Media Shift

The National Basketball Association announced a round of staff redundancies as part of a broad organisational overhaul aimed at reallocating resources toward two priority areas: the creation of a new Europe‑wide competition and a restructuring of its domestic media distribution. The league plans to launch an NBAFIBA‑backed European league featuring 12 permanent franchises and four wild‑card slots, with interest from football‑club owners such as Paris Saint‑Germain, Real Madrid and AC Milan. Deputy commissioner Mark Tatum said, “We’re extremely encouraged by the final bids we received for permanent franchises in a new NBA and FIBA‑backed league in Europe… This will be the biggest influx of capital European basketball has ever seen.”

In parallel, the NBA is responding to the collapse of regional sports networks by moving toward over‑the‑air channels, dedicated streaming apps and a potential local League Pass model. Veteran media executive Matt Volk has been appointed general manager for local media to oversee the transition for the 2026‑27 season.
