NBA imposes historic penalties on Clippers for salary cap violations
The NBA has issued historic penalties against the Los Angeles Clippers following a year-long investigation into salary cap circumvention involving Kawhi Leonard. The league imposed a $30 million fine on the franchise and stripped the team of five first-round draft picks scheduled from 2029 to 2033.
Individual sanctions include a one-year suspension for owner Steve Ballmer and a one-year suspension without pay for President of Business Operations Gillian Zucker. President of Basketball Operations Lawrence Frank received a six-month suspension. Additionally, Dennis Robertson, Leonard’s business manager, has been banned from NBA-related business for five years.
Kawhi Leonard was fined $700,000 but was not suspended. The investigation found that the Clippers facilitated impermissible off-court endorsement deals to circumvent salary cap restrictions. The resolution of this case is expected to facilitate Leonard’s pending trade to the Toronto Raptors, a deal that had been placed on hold during the inquiry.
The Clippers organization has rejected the findings and intends to appeal the decision through arbitration.
