NBA sees resurgence of the mutual option contract clause

The NBA is seeing a resurgence of the ‘mutual option,’ a contractual clause that has been largely absent from the league for approximately 25 years. Unlike a player option, where the athlete decides, or a team option, where the franchise decides, the current NBA version of the mutual option grants both parties the power to activate an additional year of the contract.

Under this mechanism, if either the player or the team chooses to activate the option, the contract continues for the following season. For the contract to terminate after the initial period, both parties must agree not to validate the final year. This structure provides a unique tool for negotiation and flexibility.

Recent players who have utilized this clause include Keon Ellis, Isaiah Hartenstein, Moe Wagner, and Pelle Larsson. In the case of Ellis, the structure allows the team to secure him if he performs exceptionally, while also allowing the player to guarantee his salary if the team seeks to move on.
