NBA teams waive players ahead of new season

As the NBA 2026-27 season approaches, several teams have finalized their rosters by waiving players to manage salary caps and roster spots.

The Portland Trail Blazers have waived forward Jeremy Sochan. After playing for the San Antonio Spurs and New York Knicks last season, the 23-year-old Sochan had signed a non-guaranteed contract with Portland in August but failed to secure a spot during the preseason.

The New York Knicks have released Bruce Brown. Despite his previous championship success with the Nuggets, the 30-year-old guard was waived to prioritize salary cap flexibility and roster depth at the center position, allowing the team to retain James Wiseman.

The Dallas Mavericks have announced the release of veteran center Dwight Powell after 12 seasons with the franchise. Mavericks President Masai Ujiri praised Powell as a dedicated player and a locker room leader, noting that the decision was driven by the need for roster flexibility as the team moves toward a younger lineup.
