NBL considers radical rule changes including three-point dunks

The National Basketball League (NBL) is exploring radical rule changes to increase innovation and viewership. Proposed concepts include awarding three points for a dunk and four points for successful shots taken from the half-court logo.

While Basketball Australia initially endorsed these tweaks, including player-only timeouts, the NBL was unable to trial them during the pre-season Blitz in Bendigo due to insufficient time to secure approval from FIBA. Officials have not ruled out revisiting these concepts in the future.

Separately, the Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL) has confirmed it will trial three new rules during its September pre-season tournament in Townsville. These include player-only timeouts, a maximum points free-throw, and immediate back-court inbound passes. If successful, these changes could be implemented as early as the upcoming regular season.
