NC State researchers unveil wearable patch that vibrates to warn of toxic gases and contaminated water

Researchers at North Carolina State University have developed a compact, solar‑powered wearable patch that can detect six environmental hazards, including dangerous gases, aerosolized toxins, and heavy metals in water. The device houses a microcontroller, sensors, a tiny battery and a haptic motor that delivers distinct vibration patterns for each hazard, allowing wearers to instantly recognize the type of threat and move to safety. The patch is roughly the size of a driver’s license and incorporates thin‑film photovoltaic cells to extend battery life.

The same technology has been adapted into an electronic “e‑skin” that can be applied to robots, enabling them to sense hazardous substances and avoid danger autonomously. The work was published in the journal *Device*.
