NCAA adopts age‑based eligibility rule for Division I athletes

The NCAA Division I Cabinet voted unanimously to replace sport‑specific eligibility rules with a single age‑based model. Under the new system, student‑athletes who enroll full‑time after turning 19 will have five years of eligibility over five years, eliminating redshirt seasons and simplifying roster management. The rule takes effect for athletes enrolling in fall 2027 or later, with exceptions for military service, religious missions and pregnancy, and a grandfathering provision for current athletes.

The change is expected to reshape recruiting, especially in track and cross‑country where older Kenyan runners have become prominent. Coaches have noted that older athletes enjoy physiological and experiential advantages over traditional college‑age competitors, and the new clock could reduce the advantage of recruiting seasoned international runners. NCAA officials highlighted that the model aligns eligibility with typical college enrollment patterns and provides clearer, more predictable rules for institutions and athletes alike.
