NCAA adopts Five-for-Five rule, simplifying college football rosters
The NCAA announced a new Five-for-Five eligibility rule that grants student‑athletes five years of competition, with the eligibility clock starting when the athlete turns 19 or at the beginning of their first academic year if they turn 19 after September 1. The change eliminates the need for redshirt designations and lets coaches list players simply as first‑year through fifth‑year athletes. Vanderbilt head coach Clark Lea praised the rule, saying it “cleans up” roster management and removes the stress of deciding which games a redshirt can play. The rule also benefits players seeking to improve their draft stock, as illustrated by University of Washington Huskies athletes such as linebacker Xe’ree Alexander and safety Alex McLaughlin, who see a fifth year as a chance to boost NFL prospects. A recent Colorado court decision extended a fifth year of eligibility to the entire 2022 class, reinforcing the broader impact of the NCAA’s policy shift.
