Big Ten and SEC ban professional athletes from returning to college sports
The Big Ten and Southeastern Conference (SEC) have both adopted new rules to prohibit athletes who have signed professional contracts, appeared on professional rosters, or declared for professional drafts without withdrawing from the process from returning to college competition.
The Big Ten's rule, which currently focuses on football, includes penalties such as a 50% season suspension for head coaches and institutional fines for violating programs. The SEC's policy is broader, covering football as well as men’s and women’s basketball, and extends to the NBA, WNBA, and NBA G League. SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey has been authorized to enforce these regulations.
These legislative moves by the major conferences come amid significant legal volatility in college sports. Recent court rulings in Louisiana have granted certain athletes, including former Mississippi tight end Dae’Quan Wright, an unexpected fifth year of eligibility. These legal developments have prompted conferences to establish their own guardrails to prevent professional players from flooding collegiate rosters.
