NCAA eligibility ruling triggers caution across college sports

A preliminary injunction issued by a Colorado federal judge has granted student-athletes from the high school graduating class of 2022 a fifth year of collegiate eligibility. The ruling, issued by Judge Charlotte N. Sweeney, requires the NCAA to declare these athletes eligible for the 2026 season, despite previous rules regarding exhausted eligibility.

In response to the legal developments, SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey issued a memo advising member schools to proceed with caution. Sankey emphasized that the legal landscape is “highly dynamic” and instructed schools to follow existing NCAA and league rules until officially advised otherwise. He noted that schools should consult with SEC staff and compliance offices before making roster commitments based on these court rulings.

The ruling has significant implications for various college programs. Kentucky basketball coach Mark Pope indicated his staff is looking for opportunities to utilize roster spots for potential additions, while Baylor football programs are evaluating the possibility of bringing back former players. The NCAA is currently seeking an expedited appeal of the injunction.
