NCAA Fifth-Year Eligibility Ruling Leaves College Football Coaches Unfazed

U.S. District Judge Charlotte Sweeney issued a nationwide preliminary injunction granting a fifth year of eligibility to all Division I athletes from the high‑school class of 2022. The order applies only to that cohort and does not alter existing revenue‑sharing caps or roster limits.

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney said the Tigers’ 2026 roster will not be affected, stating, “No. Our roster is set,” as the team begins fall camp. Kentucky head coach Mark Pope noted the ruling opens new transfer opportunities, but added the Wildcats will add players only if they are the “right” fit, remarking, “It’s interesting to be this far into summer and still uncertain about what the rules even are.” Both coaches indicated that while the eligibility change creates a broader pool of athletes, their immediate roster plans remain largely unchanged.
