NCERT releases new Class 9 Social Science textbook

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has released Part 2 of the new Class 9 Social Science textbook, titled ‘Understanding Society: India and Beyond’. This release is part of an ongoing transition to a revised school curriculum following the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE) 2023.

The new curriculum moves away from separate textbooks for History, Geography, Political Science, and Economics, opting instead for an integrated approach. Part 2 completes the revised set for Class 9, following the release of Part 1 earlier this year.

A notable addition to the revised syllabus is a new chapter titled ‘Resistance and Resilience (1000 CE–1700 CE)’. This section focuses on the political, military, and cultural developments of regional kingdoms and communities between the 11th and 17th centuries. It covers themes such as safeguarding sovereignty, alliances, the Bhakti tradition, and resistance to Arab and Turkish invasions. Historical figures, such as Queen Naiki Devi of the Chalukya kingdom, are highlighted within the content.
