NCSR Demokritos to establish new microelectronics institute

Greek Development Minister Takis Theodorikakos has announced the establishment of a new seventh institute at the National Centre for Scientific Research (NCSR) Demokritos. The Institute of Microtechnology, Microelectronics, and Microsystems aims to strengthen Greece's capabilities in the design, development, and prototyping of advanced technologies.

The move is part of a broader national strategy focused on semiconductors, microelectronics, and integrated photonics. Minister Theodorikakos emphasized that microchips are critical for strategic autonomy and competitiveness in sectors ranging from artificial intelligence and telecommunications to energy and transport.

To support this initiative, the government has already allocated 3.7 million euros to the Greek Semiconductor Capability Center to bridge the gap between research and industry. Additionally, an 8.5 million euro project is underway for a new smart building for the Institute of Informatics and Telecommunications, which hosts the 'Pharos' Greek artificial intelligence factory team.
