Obuasi SHTS sexual abuse scandal triggers investigations and official suspensions

The Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Ministry of Education have initiated significant administrative and legal actions following allegations of sexual misconduct involving Zakaria Abdulai, the headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS).

As part of the response, the Ashanti Regional Director of Education, Dr. William Amankrah Appiah, and the Obuasi Municipal Director of Education, Kwamena Owusu-Nketiah, have been directed to step aside to ensure investigations proceed without interference. The case has been transferred to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters in Accra. Reports indicate that Abdulai has been arrested, and authorities are pursuing DNA testing.

In response to the scandal, the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection has deployed a team to Obuasi to provide medical and psychological support to the affected students. Various advocacy groups, including SOS Children’s Villages Ghana and the Network for Women’s Rights (NETRIGHT), have called for comprehensive recovery plans for survivors and the swift prosecution of offenders.

The incident has sparked a national debate regarding the effectiveness of the GES reporting structure and the adequacy of child protection mechanisms within Ghanaian schools.
