Ndikama Museum hosts Benin-Portugal cultural exhibition in Lisbon

The Ndikama Museum is hosting an exhibition in Lisbon titled ‘Benin-Portugal: Encounters, Art & Cultural Exchange’ at the Nigerian Embassy. The exhibition, which runs until October 8, focuses on the historical period of interaction between the Benin Kingdom and Portuguese explorers during the 15th and 16th centuries.

Unlike narratives centered on the 1897 British invasion, this showcase highlights a period of sophisticated diplomacy and two-way trade. During the reigns of Oba Ozolua and Oba Esigie, the Benin Kingdom engaged with Portuguese traders, missionaries, and soldiers. This exchange introduced brass, copper, and firearms to Benin, while pepper, ivory, and textiles were traded outward.

The art on display, including bronzes depicting leopards, elephants, and Portuguese figures, illustrates how the Benin Kingdom integrated European elements into its own symbolic language and existing systems of meaning. The exhibition also highlights the role of Queen Idia, the first Iyoba (Queen Mother), in the historical court.
