Ndodana Tshuma seeks mental assessment in South African court

Ndodana Tshuma, a Zimbabwean-born man wanted in the United Kingdom for the alleged murders of his wife and two daughters, appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Thursday. His defense counsel requested a specialist medical and sobriety assessment, claiming Tshuma cannot remember pleading guilty to local charges or signing a plea and sentence agreement.

Tshuma faces charges in South Africa for the unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, as well as contravening the Immigration Act. While Tshuma maintains his innocence regarding the signed documents, the prosecution has opposed the request for a mental evaluation, arguing there is no evidence that he lacks the mental capacity to understand court proceedings under the Criminal Procedure Act.

Tshuma is a suspect in the July murders of Nothabo Zandile Tshuma and their two daughters, Natalie and Nala, in Bedfordshire, United Kingdom. He was apprehended in South Africa following an Interpol red notice after allegedly fleeing the UK via Heathrow. The case is scheduled to continue on 10 November.
