NDP calls for investigation into government greenwashing claims

NDP parliamentary leader Don Davies has called on the Competition Bureau to investigate the Canadian government for potential greenwashing. Davies argues that government advertising regarding clean energy infrastructure may violate laws against false or misleading environmental claims.

The complaint centers on a video from Environment and Climate Change Canada that claims Canada is building a ‘cleaner future’ through windmills and solar panels. Davies contends this contradicts statements made by Prime Minister Mark Carney, who acknowledged in a video titled ‘Forward Guidance: Canada’s Energy Future’ that national emissions are expected to rise in the coming years due to recent policy shifts.

Since assuming office in March 2025, Carney has implemented several changes to climate policy, including the elimination of the consumer carbon price, modifications to industrial carbon pricing, and the removal of an emissions cap on oil and gas production. The NDP maintains that the government's claims of a cleaner future lack the necessary evidence required by greenwashing legislation given the projected increase in business-related emissions.
