NEA and AFT push DEI into K‑12 AI tools

The National Education Association (NEA) and the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) are lobbying to embed diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) provisions into artificial‑intelligence software slated for use in K‑12 classrooms. According to a report by the watchdog group Defending Education, the unions are drafting sample board policies that would require tech vendors to incorporate DEI criteria before school districts purchase AI tools for lesson planning and student research. Defending Education warns that such moves could politicize education and institutionalize DEI in AI before the technology is widely adopted. The unions have not responded to requests for comment, while Freedom Foundation CEO Aaron Withe criticized the effort as a left‑wing political push.

The push comes as AI integration in U.S. schools is expected to expand in the coming years, raising concerns among parents and advocacy groups about the influence of ideological agendas on educational technology.
