Nea Filadelfeia: Newborn dies five hours after home birth

A newborn baby has died in Nea Filadelfeia, approximately five hours after being born at home. The incident occurred around 1:00 AM during a natural birth attended by a midwife.

Following the birth, the infant reportedly experienced respiratory difficulties but briefly showed signs of life, during which time the mother was able to breastfeed. However, the baby's condition deteriorated around 6:00 AM. Despite attempts at cardiopulmonary resuscitation by the midwife and subsequent emergency transport to Agia Olga Hospital, medical staff were unable to revive the infant.

Police are currently investigating the circumstances of the birth and the actions taken immediately afterward. Authorities are examining whether there were delays or omissions in responding to the infant's respiratory distress. Particular attention is being given to the midwife, who reportedly left the residence to go to work following the incident. Investigators are also reviewing the mother's medical history to determine if there were risk factors that should have necessitated a hospital birth rather than a home delivery.
