Neal McDonough explains why he avoids watching his own performances
Actor Neal McDonough revealed that he has never watched his own performances, including his role as the antagonist Malcolm Beck in the second season of the series ‘Yellowstone’.
Speaking on the ‘Arroyo Grande’ podcast, McDonough explained that as a method actor, revisiting his work can be “traumatic and painful” because it forces him to relive the exact thoughts, feelings, and mental states he experienced during filming. He noted that seeing a frame from decades ago allows him to recall his precise internal monologue and even the music he was thinking about at the time.
McDonough also shared that this avoidance is a way to distance himself from difficult periods in his life, including past struggles with alcohol and a period where he felt blackballed from Hollywood after refusing to perform intimate scenes. He stated that he trusts his talent and the fact that he continues to be employed rather than seeking external validation by watching his own work.
