Neanderthal pelvis study challenges views on human evolution

A new study published in Scientific Reports suggests that the modern human male pelvis may be an evolutionary anomaly rather than the standard baseline for comparison. Led by Professor Yoel Rak of Tel Aviv University, an international team of researchers compared two nearly complete male Neanderthal pelvises with dozens of modern human pelvises.

The Neanderthal specimens, one from Kebara Cave in Israel and another from Sima de los Huesos in Spain, showed proportions more similar to modern human females than to modern human males. The researchers propose that the Neanderthal pelvis retained an ancestral form, while the modern human male pelvis underwent significant changes to its hip joints.

In modern human males, the hip joints are positioned further forward than in females or Neanderthals. This shift likely created a natural shock-absorbing system that helps manage the body’s center of mass during upright walking, potentially reducing the energy required for long-distance movement. This evolutionary adaptation also resulted in a thicker pubic bone and a deeper front section of the pelvis to withstand increased physical forces.
