Nebraska Democratic Senate nominee Cindy Burbank withdraws, boosting independent Dan Osborn vs. Rep. Pete Ricketts

Cindy Burbank, the Democratic nominee who won Nebraska’s primary for the U.S. Senate, filed paperwork on July 17 to withdraw from the November ballot. The move is intended to clear the way for independent labor organizer Dan Osborn, who is backed by the state Democratic Party, to face incumbent Republican Sen. Pete Ricketts in a two‑candidate contest.

State officials, including the Republican‑led secretary of state’s office, say they will consult the attorney general on whether the withdrawal must be honored, and the decision could lead to a court challenge. Earlier disputes over ballot‑access deadlines in Nebraska suggest that any refusal to remove Burbank’s name could be litigated. Osborn already qualified for the ballot with more than 12,000 petition signatures, so his candidacy is secure regardless of the outcome.

If Burbank’s name is removed, the race would likely narrow to Ricketts versus Osborn, potentially increasing the competitiveness of a seat that could affect the balance of power in the U.S. Senate.
