Nebraska evaluates 2027 football schedule changes

Nebraska athletic director Troy Dannen has indicated that the Huskers' 2027 football schedule will likely undergo adjustments to accommodate potential changes in the college football landscape. The university is preparing for a possible expansion of the College Football Playoff to 24 teams starting in 2027.

If the expansion proceeds, the Big Ten is expected to join the SEC, ACC, and Big 12 in requiring members to play 10 games against Power Four opponents annually. Nebraska currently has nine Big Ten games scheduled for 2027, meaning the program would need to replace one of its three planned non-conference opponents—Miami (Ohio), Northern Illinois, or Northern Iowa—with a Power Four foe to meet the requirement.

Dannen confirmed that the athletic department has already begun discussions with non-conference opponents regarding these potential changes, noting that some games may be dropped or rescheduled.
