Nebraska man sentenced for bank robbery planned using ChatGPT

A 23-year-old man from Omaha, Nebraska, has been sentenced to over ten years in prison following a bank robbery in which he used ChatGPT to assist in his planning.

According to authorities, the individual used the OpenAI chatbot to inquire about police response times, how to repair a pistol, and ammunition procurement options for individuals with criminal records. During the robbery on February 10, the suspect failed to mask his face, allowing bank security cameras to capture his identity. He fled with approximately $9,175.

Investigators were able to link the suspect to the crime through surveillance footage from the bank, nearby businesses, and his vehicle. Although the suspect initially denied involvement, he permitted access to his phone, which contained the incriminating chat logs with ChatGPT. He received 37 months for the robbery and an additional 84 months for related charges.
