Nebraska university team receives DOE Genesis Mission grant for AI, 6G

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Genesis Mission selected 278 projects to build a powerful integrated science discovery platform. University of Nebraska–Lincoln professor Mehmet Can Vuran’s team was awarded a Phase I grant to develop AI‑driven research workflows that combine artificial intelligence, supercomputing, quantum systems and advanced instrumentation, aiming to double the productivity of American research and secure U.S. leadership in the global 6G race.

The project, one of the inaugural awardees announced at the Genesis Mission Summit in Washington, D.C., involves collaborators such as Brookhaven National Laboratory, ALPEMI Consulting and Hewlett‑Packard. Vuran said, “We are honored to represent Nebraska in the once‑in‑a‑lifetime Genesis Mission, which is a critical step in securing U.S. leadership in the global 6G race and advancing the Department of Energy’s scientific mission.” The award highlights Nebraska’s role in advancing AI and 6G technologies with potential benefits for energy, scientific discovery and national security.
