NEC Group launches AI Native Factory to transform software development
NEC Group has launched AI Native Factory, a new system integrator company consisting of only 12 employees. The company focuses on an ‘AI-native’ development approach where AI handles the majority of design, coding, and testing, while humans act as supervisors and decision-makers.
During a briefing, President Ryoya Ishikawa reported significant productivity gains. One case showed that a development project estimated to take seven people one year was completed by a single engineer and AI in approximately one month, representing an 80-fold increase in productivity. In public sector applications, AI generated 2,000 lines of code in just two to three hours, a task that typically requires a month of human labor.
As AI reduces development man-hours, the company is exploring new pricing models to replace the traditional ‘man-month’ billing system. Despite these gains, challenges remain, including maintaining quality in legacy systems where discrepancies between design documents and code can create noise for AI.
Separately, NEC was named a ‘Major Player’ in the IDC MarketScape report for Japan Unified AI Platforms 2026. IDC noted NEC’s ability to provide vertically integrated AI governance and security, as well as its partnerships with global AI vendors to expand its technological options through its AI Platform Service and ‘cotomi’ core technology.
