Neck and shoulder pain linked to sedentary lifestyles and screen use

Neck and shoulder pain, often referred to as “cervical” issues, is becoming increasingly common due to sedentary lifestyles and prolonged use of smartphones and computers. Physiotherapist Roberto Falla notes that the primary issue is not merely “bad posture,” but rather the prolonged maintenance of the same position and a lack of movement variability.

To mitigate these issues, experts suggest frequently changing positions, taking breaks, and ensuring sufficient physical activity rather than searching for a single “perfect posture.”

Pain radiating from the neck to the shoulder can stem from various causes, including muscle fatigue, cervical osteoarthritis, herniated discs, or rotator cuff issues. While many cases of neck stiffness are benign, medical attention is necessary if pain is intense, follows a trauma, or is accompanied by neurological symptoms such as persistent tingling, loss of strength, or numbness.
