Neck lymph nodes play critical role in brain detoxification
New research published in the journal Neurobiology of Aging suggests that the shrinking of lymph nodes in the neck during aging may play a role in brain health. Scientists have identified that as people age, particularly those over 50, the reduction in neck lymph node size can slow the drainage of lymphatic fluid from the head.
This impaired drainage process may lead to the accumulation of toxins and pathogens in and around the brain. Researchers describe the neck lymph nodes as a critical component of a unified cleaning system that includes brain drainage and lymphatic vessels in the meninges. Using MRI scans, researchers observed distinct differences between younger individuals and those over 50, noting that older adults exhibit smaller lymph nodes and altered lymphatic pathways, which hinders the efficient removal of waste products from the central nervous system.
