Neck Pain Relief: Pillows and When to See a Spine Specialist

Four cervical pillows are highlighted for their ability to retain shape for at least a year and help reduce neck discomfort. They use slow‑recovery foams such as viscoelastic, soy‑fiber, or specially shaped designs to support the head according to sleeping position—higher profiles for side sleepers, lower for back sleepers, and a butterfly‑shaped foam that creates a shoulder cradle.

Five warning signs suggest a visit to a spine specialist is needed: persistent neck or back pain lasting weeks or months; unexplained weakness, numbness or tingling in the limbs; neck pain that spreads to the arm; back pain that radiates down the leg; and lack of improvement from standard treatments. Dr. Einar Bogason, a neurosurgeon at Houston Methodist Hospital, explains that these symptoms can indicate conditions such as spinal stenosis, herniated disc, spondylolisthesis or sciatica, which may require advanced interventions like medication, injections or spinal fusion.
