Argentina faces severe winter weather: snow, cold alerts, transport disruptions
The National Meteorological Service (SMN) has issued a series of alerts across Argentina as an intense cold front brings heavy snowfall, sub‑zero temperatures and strong winds. Yellow alerts for intense snowfalls were placed on the north‑west of Chubut, while an orange alert for up to 150 cm of snow was issued for the Calingasta cordillera in San Juan. Similar conditions affect Bariloche, where streets closed by snow have been partially reopened and further cuts will remain until 28 July. Tierra del Fuego will experience a polar air mass with temperatures falling to –20 °C and a yellow alert for extreme cold. In Santa Cruz, schools were suspended for three days (27‑29 July) and shifted to virtual instruction. Córdoba warned of a high wildfire risk through the weekend, urging residents to avoid fires and report any smoke. Buenos Aires Province faces dense fog and low visibility, prompting cautions for road and air travel. Additional alerts for cold and snow persist in Mendoza, Neuquén, and other high‑mountain areas, with recommendations to use chains, carry emergency kits and limit travel.
Authorities across the affected provinces have advised the public to stay indoors when possible, dress in layers, keep heating equipment safe, and follow official road and safety updates.
