Necochea faces transport collapse and road safety crisis

Municipal authorities in Necochea and the neighboring port town of Quequén are confronting a deepening public‑transport emergency. Decades‑old bus lines have deteriorated as national subsidies vanished, leaving aging fleets in disrepair. Repeated council hearings and commissions have failed to produce concrete funding or modernization plans, prompting residents to warn that the city could soon be left without essential bus service.

A separate but related infrastructure issue resurfaced after a fatal accident on Route 88 that killed a local taxi driver and a young athlete. The tragedy intensified demands for road upgrades and safety measures linking Necochea with Mar del Plata. The municipal council’s Infrastructure Commission, chaired by Silvina Jensen, formally petitioned Governor Axel Kicillof for provincial assistance, but critics say the response has been limited to procedural paperwork. Mayor Arturo Rojas and opposition councilors have been accused of using the incident for political positioning rather than delivering tangible improvements.
