Nedbank Namibia funds mathematics education initiatives

Nedbank Namibia has donated N$99,000 to the Namibia Mathematics Institute (NMI) to support mathematics education initiatives across the country. The funding is intended to enhance teaching and learning through teacher-development workshops and the provision of practical learning materials.

The initiative aims to address challenges in mathematics performance, which can limit students' access to higher education and careers in science, technology, engineering, finance, and data analysis. By focusing on teacher competency, the NMI seeks to improve classroom outcomes and support Namibia’s transition to a knowledge-driven economy.

Recent NMI workshops in the Keetmanshoop area of the //Kharas region and the Omusati region have shown measurable success. In Keetmanshoop, a competency assessment revealed that the number of teachers scoring above 50% rose from four to 16 following the training, with seven teachers achieving scores above 70%.
