NEDC commissions fertility centre at UMTH in Borno State
The North East Development Commission (NEDC) has commissioned a new Fertility Care Centre and En-Suite Maternity Complex at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) in Borno State. The facility is designed to provide affordable assisted reproductive services to families in the North-East region, reducing the need for costly travel to cities like Lagos or Abuja.
The centre is equipped with advanced medical technology, including an Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) machine, incubators, and specialized laboratory facilities. To ensure consistent operations, the NEDC also installed a dedicated solar power system. Healthcare workers at UMTH have received specialist training to operate the new equipment.
During the commissioning, Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum pledged continued state support for UMTH and emphasized the need for stronger collaboration between state and federal authorities to improve healthcare infrastructure. The governor noted that expanding specialist services is vital for a region that has faced significant challenges from insurgency and flooding.
