Neder-Betuwe mayor imposes fines following violent asylum center protests

Jan Kottelenberg, the mayor of Neder-Betuwe, has imposed administrative fines on 24 individuals following violent protests against a proposed asylum seeker center in September. The measures, known as a ‘last onder dwangsom’, mandate that if these individuals are involved in or present at further disturbances within the municipality, they will face fines ranging from 5,000 to 15,000 euros per violation.

The unrest occurred during two unannounced demonstrations in Opheusden and Kesteren. During these incidents, protesters reportedly threw heavy, illegal fireworks at police and vandalized the town hall in Opheusden. The violence resulted in four police officers suffering hearing damage.

Mayor Kottelenberg characterized the use of heavy fireworks as ‘outright criminal and life-threatening,’ suggesting that splinter groups from outside the municipality may have incited local youth to participate in the violence. The municipality is currently working to accommodate approximately 150 asylum seekers, a plan that has faced significant local opposition.
