Nedereindse Berg suspect faces psychiatric confinement after police dog attack

A 37-year-old man faces potential mandatory psychiatric treatment with compulsory confinement following a violent confrontation with police at Nedereindse Berg during the New Year period. The incident involved a multi-hour police operation where the suspect, who is also suspected of setting a delivery van on fire in Leidsche Rijn, fled into the woods.

During the confrontation, the suspect reportedly emerged from hiding and stabbed a police dog multiple times with a knife. The dog required emergency surgery but survived. The suspect also allegedly threatened six police officers and four members of the Special Interventions Service (DSI). Officers eventually discharged their firearms, striking the man in the leg. The case is scheduled for trial on October 12.
