Nedersaksenlijn railway project enters first selection phase

ProRail has announced the first selection of potential solutions for the Nedersaksenlijn, a planned railway connection linking Groningen, Veendam, Stadskanaal, Westerwolde, Emmen, Hardenberg, Twente, and Zwolle. The project aims to improve public transport, reduce travel times, and foster regional development in areas such as housing, education, and employment.

In the province of Groningen, several routes around Veendam, Stadskanaal, and Ter Apel remain under consideration for the next phase of investigation. However, certain options have been ruled out, including routes to Delfzijl and Eemshaven, as well as expensive proposals such as full double-tracking or underground tracks.

The project is currently undergoing a MIRT exploration, a multi-step process where feasibility and financial viability are assessed. No final decisions have been made regarding specific routes, stations, or timetables.
