NEDO selects five R&D projects to advance floating offshore wind technology
The New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) has selected five research and development themes aimed at reducing the costs of floating offshore wind power systems. The initiative focuses on developing next-generation technologies suitable for Japan's specific meteorological, oceanographic, and water depth conditions to promote commercialization and international competitiveness after 2030.
The selected projects cover various technical areas, including the manufacturing and construction of floating structures, mooring design and production, and wind turbine installation and maintenance. Specific research includes the development of hybrid Tension Leg Platform (TLP) structures, concrete floating bodies, and modular floating technologies.
Obayashi Corporation, in collaboration with Eurus Energy Holdings, is working on verifying the practical application of a TLP-type hybrid floating wind turbine support structure. This technology aims to reduce construction costs by 25% compared to steel semi-submersible models and improve power generation efficiency by approximately 8% through reduced motion. The project includes testing unmanned construction techniques in deep-water areas and verifying the fatigue durability of connectors.
