Need for Speed Underground 2 playable in web browsers via fan project
An unofficial fan-made project has enabled the 2004 street racing classic Need for Speed Underground 2 to be played directly in web browsers. The project, titled Underground 2 Revived and developed by th0mk, utilizes WebAssembly and WebGPU to run the game on a user's device rather than through traditional cloud streaming.
Key features of this browser-based version include the restoration of online multiplayer and shared free roam within the fictional city of Bayview via community-operated servers. The project builds upon earlier work by Talha Müderrisoğlu and offers technical improvements such as higher-resolution rendering, controller support, skippable introductory videos, and frame rates of up to 120 FPS.
Players can access Career and Quick Race modes without creating an account. While performance depends on individual hardware and internet stability, the technology converts original Direct3D 9 instructions into WebGPU rendering commands to allow modern browsers like Google Chrome to execute the game code.
